Daniel Zbylut - Bow River Guide
Daniel started guiding with Fish Tales in 2023 after working in the shop for many years, as well as tying commercially for the shop. His expertise, work ethic and enthusiasm make a day on the water with Daniel a day well spent.
How long have you been guiding?
My first season guiding was 2023
Why and how did you get started in guiding?
After working at Fish Tales for a few years and being around other guides it was naturally
the next step in my progression within the industry.
Are you a fly tier?
Yes, I tie my own flies and a few leech and trout spey patterns for Fish Tales
Favorite pattern(s)?
My most used flies are a peacock leech and a clouser minnow.
What do you row? Why?
I row a Clackacraft 16ft low profile, it’s lightweight, maneuverable and has an advantage on windy days.
Favorite fishing technique?
For me streamer fishing is top of the list
Do you prefer guiding experienced anglers or beginners?
Both come with their challenges, however creating an enjoyable trip depending on
expectations is what I like the most about guiding and can be done at any skill level.
Your strengths as a guide?
I’m young, I work hard and don’t get tired easily.
What do you do to add to the experience on a slow(er) day?
I try and get to know the people in my boat and answer any questions they might have
about the Bow or fly fishing in general
Favorite guide-related memory?
One of the most memorable moments was rowing up to a rising fish in a flat, we pulled over watched it for a few minutes while re-tying one of the rods. The fish was successfully caught and got the day started in a great way.
Embarrassing anecdote (something that happened while guiding)?
Forgetting my net is a classic mistake I am guilty of.
This is seasonal work…. What do you do in the off-season?
I am a student at MRU and work part time at Fish Tales
Given the opportunity who would you choose to fish with? Or someone who has inspired you as an angler/tier/teacher/guide?
I have learned a lot from Matt Chatani and he has definitely played a role in me getting into guiding, but I’ve done many days on the water with guys from the shop.
