2025 marks our third return to Xcalak in pursuit of black-tailed devils. This area is a mecca for permit, but anglers can also choose to target tarpon, cruising cudas, and more.
During our 2024 week, our group of six anglers landed 10 permit and completed 3 grand slams. The final permit count for the week for everyone at the lodge was 21 with 5 grand slams in total. Permit were landed while wading, from the boat, on sinking crabs, and on floating crabs. Watching a permit attack a floating crab is something we will be dreaming about until the next trip. On our 2022 week, three group members landed their first permit during the week despite a couple days of bad weather; rain and winds. The food is great, the lodging comfortable, and the permit plentiful. The group dedicated a lot of time to pursuing permit but also got some tarpon and bonefish to hand. X-Flats is located in the remote village of Xcalak on the southernmost tip of the Yucatan Peninsula bordering Belize. Owned and operated by Colorado fishing guide turned lodge operator Jesse Colter, the lodge offers a relaxing home base complete with air conditioning and wi-fi after full days on the flats.
The area is home to bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, jacks, and more. Fishing days can be focused on specific species/techniques, or offer a variety depending on what you (and your fishing partner) want to do.
Spring 2024 trip dates: May 31 - June 7 at the lodge. We are currently looking into the option of flying into and out of Tulum instead of Cancun and will keep clients who want to join the trip updated on those logistics. Limited availability - please contact the shop for more informaton.
