Product Review - Sage Click Fly Reel by Daniel Zbylut

An ultralight large arbor click reel is a niche item in the modern fly reel market that is largely ignored by most companies. The Sage Click Reel is one of the few reels out there that meets these criteria, and this is why I choose the 3/4/5 Sage Click Reel for my 8’6 4-weight. There appears to be an industry wide trend for lighter and lighter rods, and this creates a problem when selecting a reel because even the reels with the lightest drag can be too cumbersome in the 3/4-weight range.

I use this rod/reed combo as a close-range dry fly setup and when putting this kit together I knew I wanted light and precise to describe it. I wasn't overly concerned with the lack of drag on the reel because I find tippet strength to be a limiting factor in drag tension. Usually I'm fishing 4X tippet and sometimes might even go thinner depending on the application. Despite being a click and pawl design, this reel has a robust adjustable tension system. This small dial located on the back of the reel allows for minute adjustments in the click tension giving the user some control.

The Sage Click Reel is constructed with lightweight machined aluminum and is as minimalist as it gets. It has a larger arbor then many other current click and pawl reels, and comes in three sizes to cover all light application freshwater situations. One of the drawbacks of this reel is its impact resistance - this is not a reel that will hold up to getting dropped on rocks repeatedly. Choosing a different reel might be a better option if you are hard on your gear, but it will come at the cost of weight. Aside form that, if you are after a modern fly reel with a classic click and pawl system this is the reel for you.

Pros:

  • Large arbor for a click and pawl reel
  • Adjustable tension knob
  • Balances well with short, light modern rods
  • Lightweight, minimalist design
  • Protects lighter tippets
  • High grade aluminum is precisely machined
  • Dry fly purist appeal

 Cons:

  • Design is more delicate than bulkier disc drag options - not a great option for those who are hard on gear
