Product Review - HUK Women's Icon Long Sleeved UPF Sun Hoody by Nancy Storwick

Earlier this spring we were in Cuba where I put the HUK Women's Icon Sun Hoody to work while fishing and touring the countryside. This shirt got a lot of use during this trip because my luggage didn't make it to Varadero. Fortunately, we've learned to pack essentials - like wading shoes and a set of fishing clothes - in our carry-ons.

The HUK Icon Sun Hoody is equipped with a built in hood and long sleeves for sun protection. It also has a quarter zip that allows you to open up/cool off if necessary.

As a female angler I still feel overlooked at times by manufacturers. Clothing options are sometimes limited and often stay in the tried-and-true fishing colors or are designed with athletic builds in mind. I liked the more vibrant color and pattern of this shirt so decided to give it a try.

I wore this shirt every day of our six days of fishing plus two days during our sightseeing week - one day while hiking/caving, and another while exploring a new fishing area. I hand washed the shirt several times over the two weeks and was pleasantly surprised that it was dry by the next morning.

It took me a bit of time to get used to the feel of the quarter zip but I found that the slight irritation I felt from the zipper backing abated as the week went on. I have long arms so I also had to be aware of the space between the end of the sleeve and the top of my sunglove - generally coverage was good but occasionally I had to adjust one item or the other.

Pros:

  • Price (less than $100 )
  • 50 UPF
  • Quick drying
  • Microbial
  • Vibrant Color
  • Cooling
  • Generous fit
  • Comfortable

 Cons:

  • Zipper backing took some getting used to
  • Hood is a little loose so doesn't stay put on long boat runs.
  • No finger loop to secure sleeve
