Fall - a favorite fishing season
Sep 20, 2025
The leaves are starting to turn, overnight temperatures are dropping, and there's a crispness in the morning air - it's definitely starting to feel like fall. Fortunately fall is one of our favorite fishing seasons.
Although this year's rainy July put a damper on some fishing, it meant slightly lower water temperatures and more consistent flows than we've had for a couple of seasons. For the next few weeks - until temperatures drop and the frost is heavy each morning - we can expect great conditions on our local waters.
We're seeing loads of bugs locally including pseudocloeons (tiny BWO's), tricos, caddis, hoppers, and midges. The annual season for backswimmers and water boatman is upon us as well. It's the season of the small fly. (Check out our "Small for Fall" article.)
Fall is also a time that anglers revert back to OR invest-in waders in order to extend their fishing season. We are well-stocked in waders from Patagonia, Grundens, and SIMMS. For women we have all of the above brands as well as good inventory of Orvis Clearwaters which seem to offer a more inclusive size range.
If you visit the shop you'll notice we have loads of clothing in-store. With the change of seasons comes an updated color palette and new styles from all the brands we carry. Check out new items like the SIMMS Strata collection or Patagonia's Hi-Loft Nano insulating layers. And be sure to take a look through our sales corner for recent markdowns from SIMMS, Patagonia, HUK, and more.
Ultimately our Bow river season never ends but becomes less inviting as the temperatures drop below zero. Now is a great time to hit the water.
