Cuba Fly Fishing Day Trips

 If you are traveling to Varadero or Havana between December 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025 there is a fantastic opportunity for a day or two of fly fishing for bonefish, tarpon and other flats fish. This is a unique offer: very few places in Cuba offer day trips.

The area is the Zapata National Park (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) and the Bay of Pigs, directly south of Varadero. This is a huge area that we have been fishing for the past 20 years. We organize hosted trips to this location annually and are very familiar with it. During December and January they have some availability to offer day trips in two different locations.

Rio Hatiguanico - a tarpon fishery! There are 1000’s of tarpon in this complex large spring fed river system. This system is home to everything from baby tarpon to fish over 100lbs. If you go you will need to be prepared! The tarpon are always in the river it’s just a matter of if they will cooperate on any given day when you're fishing the Rio. A 9 wt rod is a minimum for this location. 

 Las Salinas - This is one of the most consistent flats areas we’ve fished. Salinas has decent size bonefish (2-6lbs), juvenile tarpon, some snook in the “bocas”, and some permit as well (winter months there are less permit around). There are other flats characters as well (Cuda, snapper, jacks, etc). You can wade beautiful sand flats or hunt from the boat in the softer mangrove areas. The drive through the incredible bird area of the Zapata marsh on the way to and from the boat dock is also a highlight. You will see beautiful wild flamingos and 100’s of other birds on the short drive. One of our favourite places on Earth!

The vehicle transfer is about 1.5 - 2 hours each way, Lunch and drinks would be provided, and a full day of fishing for single and double anglers in one of the very comfortable bass tracker boats on the bio-diverse Rio Hatiguanico.

TWO Days of Fly Fishing

Take advantage of a great opportunity to experience a taste of the “real” Cuba with two days of fly fishing and a “FREE” overnight in a “beach town” in the Bay of Pigs.

We can arrange for you to be picked up in Varadero or Havana early in the morning (about 1.5 - 2 hour drive) to fish tarpon in the Rio Hatiguanico. After fishing you will be transferred to Playa Larga (just over an hour drive) on the Bay of Pigs to stay in a Casa Particular (Cuban Bed & Breakfast). Includes a wonderful Cuban dinner! For day two of fishing you will be taken to Las Salinas (about a 45min drive) and flats fish for bonefish, tarpon, and other flats species that are around. The boats are Beavertail Skiffs which work well in the very shallow waters of Salinas. At the end of your fishing day you would be transferred back to Varadero or Havana (about a 3-3.5 hour drive from the boat dock)
