How long have you been fishing?
I can still remember catching my first fish (Northern Pike) off the dock at a northern Saskatchewan fly in bush camp. The camp was a uranium exploration camp managed by my dad. I remember driving through forest fires on the way to La Ronge and boarding a Twin Otter float plane to fly into the camp. Living in a wall tent, eating camp food served by the ol cook with the cig hanging out of the corner of his lip, going out in a helicopter on floats to survey with dad, so many vivid memories and such an adventure. I was 5 at the time!
How long have you been fly fishing?
Feels like forever :D
How did you get started in fly fishing?
I can’t remember the exact year, but it was the early to mid 80’s having just moved to Calgary and my dad asking me in the basement of our family home if I was interested in trying fly fishing. I remember an old crappy fly reel (which I still have) with a camo braided line that really peaked my interest. Dad and I took casting lessons through Country Pleasures from Neil Jennings and or Jim McLennan. I remember being given a whippy fiberglass fly rod built by a friend of dads to fish with and I remember casting on Cataract Creek for the first time which cemented my love of mountain streams.
I have a real soft spot for the Cutthroat.
The Bow River will always be at the top of the list while Cataract Cr. holds so many family memories for me.
Small dries to rising fish
I don’t really have one.
Favorite fishing book or DVD –
Schmookler & Sils book - Forgotten Flies
Favorite Vise (as in the tool.)
Renzetti Traveler. (I do travel with it)
Favorite pattern to tie?
A pike pattern I designed years ago for my first foray into pike on the fly and It did not disappoint! That fly landed me 5 fish between 40-45” on my first two days that I had ever dedicated to fly fishing for pike. Since then that same fly landed a record walleye out of the exact same hole the pike came from.
Most interesting (remote, distant, crowded, etc.) location you’ve fished.
I really loved fishing all the streams in Yellowstone National Park over the three summers that I worked in the Park. It is a crazy and beautiful place to fly fish!
I also love the isolation and remoteness of Christmas Island.
Your destination/species wishlist:
I love to travel and see new places so really anyplace with fish that will take a fly.
Iceland’s Brown Trout
I would like to fish Japan the next time I am there.
Given the opportunity who would you choose to fish with? Or someone who has inspired you as an angler/tyer/teacher/guide.
I would really just like to fish with my dad again.
