The first destination to steal our hearts…. 2019 will be our 19th year going to Cuba. We have spent more time in Cuba than in any other country. Its people, and its flats continue to pull us back.
For the past several years our Cuba trip offerings have been to the south coast and Las Salinas (Bay of Pigs) area within Zapata National Park (not impacted by Hurricane Irma.) This area is home to some of the most productive bonefish flats in terms of numbers and average size fish (3-5lbs) that we’ve been to. Plus, if you put in the time you will likely see permit in Salinas. Recent upgrades to the fishing boats at Salinas means better access to a broader range of fishing areas. Also part of this destination is “The Rio” – the river is home to tarpon of all sizes as well as snook.
Bottom line – Zapata is a great choice for anglers who enjoy the thrill of a screaming run, like the chance to catch decent bonefish while wading or hunting from the boat, and want a good opportunity at tarpon. You will have more than enough fishing time as a result of the one to one (guide: client) ratio.
A brand new (completed in June 2017) “Ranchon” building created for an exclusive atmosphere and restaurant for the angling guests is a great addition. Guests stay in single-occupancy air-conditioned rooms and have meals (breakfast & dinner) daily in the new facility. Lunch is provided daily while on the flats. Fish Tales has found some wonderful private restaurants and at least one of the evening meals will be at these special places.
We have set up our trips to run from Saturday to Saturday in and out of Varadero, Cuba due to flight availability. For the dates we have scheduled there are direct flights from Calgary and Toronto. We are happy to help you with information regarding extra days in the area if you want to visit Havana, or other areas.
